LADIES

Congratulations to our Ladies County Foursomes team of Sally, Harriet, Pam and Jenny who won their semi-final 10 up!! They now face Scraptoft in the final on September 7th at Cosby Golf Club.

I ended my last entry by advertising the Ladies’ Darts Evening. Unfortunately I was not able to be there, but I understand it was an excellent evening. Thank you Brenda for your organisation and many thanks to the well-dressed men who helped with the scoring (and keeping the girls in order!). Well done to the new Ladies’ Champion, Wendy Elsdon, who obviously has hidden talents!

It is now competition time on the golf course. The Sturton Cup has been played, resulting in a draw. Congratulations to Carole Richards and Pam Skidmore who now have to play a refereed final.

The Lady Captain’s Spring Competition ended with the ladies creeping round the clubhouse trying not to disturb the viewing of a rather important (and disastrous) match for Leicester City. We did manage, quietly, to present some outstanding prizes.

Ø       to Jan Clark, Anne Straker, Helen Shaw and Sue Morris for the Winter Eclectic

Ø       to Sandra Powell for her win in the Winter League

Ø       to Carole Allsop and Alison Terrington and to Anne Fisher and Sheila Aldwinckle who were joint winners of the Captain’s Challenge (but I’m not telling you what their score was!) Suffice to say that Jane and I enjoyed all the matches and were more successful in some than others. Thanks to all of you who entered, and apologies to the people we didn’t manage to re-arrange.

Well done to Sandra Powell and Barbara Wright who were the winners of our Australian Spoons qualifying round. They are at this moment waiting to hear if they are in the regional round at Bury St. Edmonds in June.

On 14th May two intrepid ladies attacked the storeroom at the top of the stairs. Four hours later the room had been emptied, cleaned from top to bottom, all the contents sorted, everything of value neatly boxed and labelled and stowed back again. Two carloads of rubbish were taken to the tip – after consultation. The room was transformed. Woe betide any one who dares to mess it up again! Very grateful thanks to June and Jackie for all their efforts.

The 15th May should have been our Open, which we had to cancel as it clashed with the County Club Championships. We took advantage of a free day to have a first run at the new 9 hole qualifier. Many of us set off thinking this would be easy - after all, we already had 18 points in the bag. Unfortunately it didn’t prove as easy as we thought and many of us somehow managed to add 0.1 to our handicaps!

After that disappointment, Carol Hinks and I set off for Scraptoft to see how our ladies were getting on in the Club championships. Val Bowler, Sandra Powell and June Dobney (looking a trifle less dusty than she had when I had last seen her the day before) all enjoyed interesting rounds with ladies from other clubs in the handicap division.

Moira Page, Jenny Cooper and Pam Skidmore represented us in the Scratch division and took second place. WELL DONE.

On 19th May, I was privileged to see the Ladies County Foursomes team of Moira Page, Jenny Cooper, Helen Shaw and Sue Morris win their match at Charnwood. They now progress to the second round – at home on 9th June to the winners of the Longcliffe/ Parkhill match. Again well done Ladies.

The Handicap and Scratch League matches are now underway. Good luck to our teams.

I personally had a disastrous journey over to Peterborough Milton for our friendly match. I eventually arrived in the car park with 2 minutes to spare. But what a team I had. The pairings were all sorted and the first pair was going out. Many thanks to you all for your support, and my apologies. A dozen of us returned a few days later for their Open and some of us even managed to scoop 2nd prize. I got there in record time that day – avoiding the AA scenic route!

The end of May brings our Summer Ball – no not punting down the river, but enjoying ourselves in the marquee at the Bath at Shearsby.  Don’t forget to be there early enough to be photographed in all your finery. See the Captain’s Blog 11 for the details.

The 2nd June is our Away Day at Erewash. Jane is collecting final payments. The tee times and maps are in the locker room as is the sheet to sign up for a bacon cob if you should want one.

Dominic is running a series of 5 group lessons starting on June 16th. Sign up for these in the locker room. At a cost of £5, a minimum of 5 ladies is needed.

Don’t forget our Club Championships on 22nd June.

And finally, thank you to all of you who took the time and trouble to fill in the questionnaire following the Away Weekend. If you have not done so, there is still time. Please put them in the card box in the locker room. Jane will be analysing these soon and using them to help her plan for next year.
