LADY
CAPTAIN’S AWAY DAY
TUESDAY 1ST JUNE
OVERSTONE PARK GC
47 Ladies ventured over the border to Northamptonshire
for my Away Day. Even though many of us had sore knees,
through praying for a fine day, it was a little damp.
This did not deter us!!!
After bacon cobs we set off to play, what was to the
majority, a new course. Often, we drove off in blind
faith towards that striped pole and then climbed to the
top of the hill to actually see where the green was for
our second shot. The 4th and 17th
were a little tricky, with the water acting as a magnet
for
some, the bunkers on the fairway and greenside were very
inviting to those white balls and the trees helped and
hindered, a few of my shots. However, overall I believe
everyone enjoyed the course and many would like to
return to play under clear blue skies!!!
We shared the dining room for our meal with Overstone’s
Men’s Senior Team who had played a Friendly against
Brampton. I have to say they made us feel very welcome
and we supported each other during the subsequent
speeches and presentation. I am informed however,
that they did have to think of alternative jokes to
tell.
On this occasion Pat Chamberlain chose the prizes, which
had a “picnic” theme, very useful with Music on the
Fairway coming shortly. The prize table looked wonderful
with a colourful array of items.
The winners on the day were:
Carol Hinks, Sandra Powell, Elizabeth Cox, Shirley
Hammond - 81pts
2nd Pat Chamberlain, Di Goddard, Jan Ball,
Gaynor Swingler - 80pts
3rd Wendy Harris, Bronwen Hunter, Jackie
Haigh, Jill Millington - 79pts
4th Jan Clark, Carole Allsop, Roni Tucker,
Ethne Woodruff - 78pts
5th June Dobney, Anne Straker, Anne Bluck,
“Hidden Partner” - 77pts
6th Sue Morris, Di Render, Kathy Carter,
Chris Hunter - 73pts
Nearest the Pin on the Par 3, 100yard, 4th
Hole - Sharon Freedman
18 hole putting competition - Sue Morris - 42pts
A big thank you to all the staff at Overstone who looked after us
very well indeed throughout the day, and to all the
ladies who accompanied me, I had a super day.

LADY CAPTAINS AWAY WEEKEND
DRAYCOTE HOTEL AND WHITEFIELDS GOLF COURSE
18TH-20TH APRIL 2010
We drove to this beautiful golf course
All 24 ladies and Gwen
We played in glorious sunshine........
How very fortunate we were with the weather and what a
great weekend we had. Sunshine throughout our stay
although we did have a chilly wind the last day. BUT
NO RAIN.

The course had some very challenging holes and greens,
with a few water hazards BUT please note this
year my trolley didn’t get wet!!!!!!! Draycote Water
provided some stunning views, which unfortunately also
attracted the gnats especially among the trees.

The choice and quality of food was excellent and the
staff looked after us very well. Shame we gave up the
weight loss group just before Easter maybe we need to
start it again!!!

The quiz on Sunday got the grey cells working and bees
and honey pot comes to mind when we put out the
childhood photographs for “ Who are they now?”

This caused a lot of discussion but I think in the end
everyone spotted our Club President Phil Adcock and
Vice President Chris Bott who we slipped in among
your fellow golfers. Maybe this should be repeated
at a future function.

Thank you to everyone for joining me at Draycote and for
all the poems you created for me. It was a lot of fun, I
really enjoyed it and I hope all you did too.

The Final for the Presidents Bowl and Wills Cup was held on
Saturday 13th March 2010, contesting this were:
Alison Terrington and Jenny Martin
Moira Page and Jackie Covington
The weather was fine and dry, the course in a wonderful
condition and the match played in a great spirit. Those
who followed the match did see some excellent golf,
which was inspiring to watch. Fortunes seemed to favour
Moira and Jackie for much of the game, however, Alison
and Jenny did make a come back to take them to the 18th
hole where Jackie sank a great putt to win the game.
Well done to Moira and Jackie for their win and
commiserations to Alison and Jenny for a valiant fight
back.

The weather in January was not too
kind to us with the course being
closed for a while due to snow
causing the cancellation of the
Ladies Fun Golf on 19th.
I was in Florida at the time, which
was a lot colder than normal but
certainly nothing to compare with
the dreadful conditions in the
U.K.
I was getting concerned for the Ladies Fun Golf
scheduled for 16th February, as the forecast
was “heavy rain”. I had taken the precaution of asking
Francis that, if he needed to close the course, to add a
rider to his message that the Ladies Lunch would still
go ahead. WHY DID I WORRY?? On the day the sun shone
and the golf went ahead no problem. {Let’s hope we have
that sort of success, weather wise at the Lady Captain’s
Away Weekend in April at Whitefields Golf Course.}
A very enjoyable lunch followed and P.C. Steve Day,
Crime Reduction Officer, was our after lunch speaker
talking on “ Personal Safety”. This stimulated a great
deal of discussion and the Personal Safety Alarms, at a
cost of £3.00, sold like hot cakes due to their very
feminine design and variety of colours. A donation of
£30 was given to Steve for “The Police Benevolent Fund”
as a token of our appreciation for his time. Please let
me know if you wish to purchase a personal alarm as
Steve has offered to obtain additional supplies if
required.
On 19th February we had further snow, which
seemed to thaw very quickly but as I write this we have
another blizzard, lets hope this goes just as quickly so
that the Barn Dance scheduled for 20th is
able to go ahead and the Captains Challenges scheduled
for next week. Pat and I are really enjoying the games
and the company, to date we have only
had to postpone one due to the weather let’s
hope we can manage to play all the rest. We have kept
March relatively free, just in case.
A
chance meeting today in a “well known“ supermarket has
led to a suggestion that we collect the School Vouchers
they are currently giving out for a local school. So,
all those members who have no one to give their School
Vouchers to please place them in the container in the
Locker Room and I will arrange for them to be passed on.
Let’s hope that as the snowdrops, crocus and daffodils
appear so will wonderful springtime weather for golf.

Oh my, what a busy month December
has been.
Firstly on 1st December the Bring and Win Competition, a
very frosty day but fine and dry which was a bonus. This
was followed by cake and mulled wine and got us all off
to a good start to the month of December. I am pleased
to say my team came in second with a score of 52, to
which I did contribute a little.
Next came the Coffee morning on 4th December and
how supportive everyone was. The stallholders,
people who donated items and all those who came
along on the day as customers. I am very pleased to
say we raised a creditable £435 for the Ladies
Section, which easily covers the entertainment for
our Christmas Dinner. In addition we made £160
for “The Laura Centre” from the Quilt Raffle and the
Card Stall.
A BIG THANK YOU TO EVERYONE.
Then came the Children’s Christmas Party on 6th
December!!! 40+children, games, dancing, bubbles,
followed by Chicken Nuggets and Chips and of course
ketchup. What a time they had. Of course Santa managed
to fit a visit in to his VERY busy schedule and I
believe Richard Senior has a photograph to prove it. It
really was a joy to be a very small part of it all.
Special thanks should go to the Social Committee for all
their hard work in organising this event.
On 12th December it was the Christmas Dinner
Dance. This was an excellent evening, David Broadly, a
singer from New Zealand, was very good, shame he is
shortly going “down under” to live. Thanks again must go
to the Social Committee.

The Ladies Christmas Dinner was on 16th
December, I hope everyone enjoyed it as much as I did.
Excellent food, superb service from our “ male waiters”,
entertainment that even when you saw it you couldn’t
believe it and then the Carols!!!!! WONDERFUL.

I WOULD LIKE TO WISH EVERYONE A VERY
MERRY CHRISTMAS
AND
HAPPY GOLFING FOR 2010

I
can hardly believe that some 7 weeks
have passed since I became your Lady
Captain and some 7 weeks since that
nerve wracking Drive-In. I have to
say however, that on reflection, I
had a lovely day and would like to
say a big thank you to you all for
all your good wishes and the support
I have received. It has been a busy
few weeks, I have had so many purses
in use for all the money I have been
collecting for various future events
and the calculator has been well
used.
My chosen charity for the year is: The Laura Centre.
We were very fortunate with the weather on the 17th
November for the Fun Golf and Charity Lunch. I think the
golf was enjoyed by all and our President Phil Adcock
and Men’s Captain Paul Wallace kindly joined us for
lunch.
Following a very enjoyable meal Gail Moore, Founder and
Fund Raising Manager for the Laura Centre spoke to us
about the origins of The Centre and the very valuable
work it undertakes. I think Gail’s talk moved us all
and the table collection raised £106.60. I do hope that
we have a successful years fund raising for this very
worthwhile cause.
I am delighted to say that I now have Pat Chamberlain as
my Vice Captain. I am very grateful to her for taking on
this role and am sure that Pat and I will work well
together over the forthcoming year.
I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible for
mulled wine and cake following the Bring and Win on 1st
December.
