LADIES

The weather in January was not too kind to us with the course being closed for a while due to snow causing the cancellation of the Ladies Fun Golf on 19th. I was in Florida at the time, which was a lot colder than normal but certainly nothing to compare with the dreadful conditions in the U.K.

I was getting concerned for the Ladies Fun Golf scheduled for 16th February, as the forecast was “heavy rain”. I had taken the precaution of asking Francis that, if he needed to close the course, to add a rider to his message that the Ladies Lunch would still go ahead. WHY DID I WORRY??  On the day the sun shone and the golf went ahead no problem. {Let’s hope we have that sort of success, weather wise at the Lady Captain’s Away Weekend in April at Whitefields Golf Course.}

A very enjoyable lunch followed and P.C. Steve Day, Crime Reduction Officer, was our after lunch speaker talking on “ Personal Safety”. This stimulated a great deal of discussion and the Personal Safety Alarms, at a cost of £3.00, sold like hot cakes due to their very feminine design and variety of colours. A donation of £30 was given to Steve for “The Police Benevolent Fund” as a token of our appreciation for his time. Please let me know if you wish to purchase a personal alarm as Steve has offered to obtain additional supplies if required.

On 19th February we had further snow, which seemed to thaw very quickly but as I write this we have another blizzard, lets hope this goes just as quickly so that the Barn Dance scheduled for 20th is able to go ahead and the Captains Challenges scheduled for next week. Pat and I are really enjoying the games and the company, to date we have only had to postpone one due to the weather let’s hope we can manage to play all the rest. We have kept March relatively free, just in case.

A chance meeting today in a “well known“ supermarket has led to a suggestion that we collect the School Vouchers they are currently giving out for a local school. So, all those members who have no one to give their School Vouchers to please place them in the container in the Locker Room and I will arrange for them to be passed on.

Let’s hope that as the snowdrops, crocus and daffodils appear so will wonderful springtime weather for golf.

Oh my, what a busy month December has been.

Firstly on 1st December the Bring and Win Competition, a very frosty day but fine and dry which was a bonus. This was followed by cake and mulled wine and got us all off to a good start to the month of December. I am pleased to say my team came in second with a score of 52, to which I did contribute a little.

Next came the Coffee morning on 4th December and how supportive everyone was. The stallholders, people who donated items and all those who came along on the day as customers.  I am very pleased to say we raised a creditable £435 for the Ladies Section, which easily covers the entertainment for our Christmas Dinner. In addition we made £160 for “The Laura Centre” from the Quilt Raffle and the Card Stall.
A BIG THANK YOU TO EVERYONE.

Then came the Children’s Christmas Party on 6th December!!!  40+children, games, dancing, bubbles, followed by Chicken Nuggets and Chips and of course ketchup. What a time they had. Of course Santa managed to fit a visit in to his VERY busy schedule and I believe Richard Senior has a photograph to prove it. It really was a joy to be a very small part of it all. Special thanks should go to the Social Committee for all their hard work in organising this event.

On 12th December it was the Christmas Dinner Dance. This was an excellent evening, David Broadly, a singer from New Zealand, was very good, shame he is shortly going “down under” to live. Thanks again must go to the Social Committee.

The Ladies Christmas Dinner was on 16th December, I hope everyone enjoyed it as much as I did. Excellent food, superb service from our “ male waiters”, entertainment that even when you saw it you couldn’t believe it and then the Carols!!!!! WONDERFUL.

I WOULD LIKE TO WISH EVERYONE A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS

AND

HAPPY GOLFING FOR 2010

I can hardly believe that some 7 weeks have passed since I became your Lady Captain and some 7 weeks since that nerve wracking Drive-In. I have to say however, that on reflection, I had a lovely day and would like to say a big thank you to you all for all your good wishes and the support I have received. It has been a busy few weeks, I have had so many purses in use for all the money I have been collecting for various future events and the calculator has been well used.

My chosen charity for the year is: The Laura Centre.

We were very fortunate with the weather on the 17th November for the Fun Golf and Charity Lunch.  I think the golf was enjoyed by all and our President Phil Adcock and Men’s Captain Paul Wallace kindly joined us for lunch.

Following a very enjoyable meal  Gail Moore, Founder and Fund Raising Manager for the Laura Centre spoke to us about the origins of The Centre and the very valuable work it undertakes. I think Gail’s talk moved us all and the table collection raised £106.60.  I do hope that we have a successful years fund raising for this very worthwhile cause.

I am delighted to say that I now have Pat Chamberlain as my Vice Captain. I  am very grateful to her for taking on this role and am sure that Pat and I will work well together over the forthcoming year.

I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible for mulled wine and cake following the Bring and Win on 1st December.

Ladies of Glen Gorse, thank you so very much for the table lamps that I was presented with last night at the Ladies A.G.M. They will always be a shining reminder of my year as Captain.

For those of you who were not there, I ended my report with the hope that I will be remembered as the Captain of the quotes.

I read out the card which Howard gave me before the meeting - 'If it goes to the right it's a SLICE, if it goes to the left it's a HOOK and if it goes straight it's a miracle.'

Howard wrote inside the card  ' Yours is always a miracle.'

A quick note to say that The Ladies Handicap Section won their division, which will mean that they will go up next season.
We are saying very little ref The Mail On Sunday as unfortunately we lost in the 8th round on Tuesday V Royal Norwich.

The ladies team from Glen Gorse are just one game away from qualifying for the quarter finals of this National competition having played around six matches already.

The team of captain Pam Skidmore, Moira Page, Jenny Cooper, Harriet Hewitt & Sally Chapman travelled to Brampton Park Golf Club in Huntingdon to play a very difficult course against a team who had won their previous six home games and really fancied their chances.

Harriett set the standard with a 7&6 demolition of her opponent with a near perfect round of golf which her opponent claimed was the best she had seen. The other games were much closer but the ladies played some great golf and triumphed 3&2.

It was a tremendous victory shared by a good amount of support from the travelling Glen members. Well done to all.

I wish to thank everyone for helping make my Captain's Day such a wonderful occasion.

As I said 'The rain was out, the clouds were grey, but there was sunshine in my heart.'

Jane Linsley - 23/07/2009

Congratulations go to Captain Pam Skidmore, Moira Page, Harriet Hewitt, Rebecca Hovell and Lorraine Penrice for winning the sixth round match in The Mail on Sunday Competition.  It was a nail biting sudden death being won on the second extra hole.

It is still not known where the seventh round will be played.

Jane Linsley - 10/07/2009

Thirty two ladies enjoyed wonderful sunshine at Northampton Golf Club on Tuesday 2nd June.  The course has wonderful scenery, old trees and of course many walls belonging to the Althorp Estate.

The winning team - Anne Straker, Pat Imlay, Sandra Powell and Brenda Hopewell.

The runners-up - Jenny Anderson, Liz Pretty, Joyce Broughton and Peggy Hunt.

We can all recommend a round of golf there, the hospitality from members and staff was very good.  Now we are all looking forward to where Wendy Elsdon takes us next year.

Jane Linsley - 06/06/2009

Moira Page, Harriet Hewitt, Sally Chapman, Rebecca Hovell and I managed a difficult hurdle playing Ormonde Fields Golf Club (Ripley) away in the latest round of the Daily Mail match play competition.

We were all giving double figures in shots on a course which had a big local knowledge factor. All the games were very close but Glen Gorse edged it three games to two.

A big thank you to the caddies and the ladies that supported.

The squad has reached a fairly advanced stage of the competition and would welcome support in the next round once our opponents are known.

Pam Skidmore - 01/06/2009

Glen Gorse Ladies enjoying the sunshine at Greetham Valley on the Lady Captain Away Weekend.
The Golf - The Fun - The Friendship was truly wonderful.

Jane Linsley - 30/03/2009

The Draw for the Ladies Charity Car Park has taken place with the winner being Ann Albert. £97.00 was raised for Charity.

Carol Hinks was the winner of the successful Ladies Darts Evening and I am looking forward to seeing many members at The Quiz Night, next Friday the 3rd of April.

Congratulations are due to Di Goddard on a hole in one, on the 4th, during The Fun Golf Competition on Sunday. A great day was had by all on a beautiful sunny afternoon.

Well done June and Keith Dobney for organising this competition.

Jane Linsley - 30/03/2009

Commiserations to Sue Morris and Lorraine Penrice for a very close match against Western Park in the “Daily Mail” Foursome on Saturday 21st March 09. The Match was lost on the 19th hole.

Congratulations to our Scratch Team: Captain Pam Skidmore, Moira Page, Jenny Cooper, Sally Chapman, Harriet Hewitt and reserve Rebecca Hovell for the win against Kirby Muxloe in “The Mail On Sunday” competition. It was a nail biting sudden death, being won on the 19th hole. Thanks go to all the ladies who came and supported our team.

Jane - 22/03/09

A successful Lunch took place on Tuesday 19th March; I now know my next holiday destination ambition - New Zealand.  My thanks go to Ian Bowler our excellent speaker.  My thanks also go to Sue Morris for organizing the Fun Golf Competition and to young Richard for the lunch which was enjoyed by all the ladies.

I look forward to our Darts Evening on Friday 27th March when we are going to draw the Charity Car Park raffle (see me for tickets).

April will soon be with us and the commencement of the friendly matches.  Please sign up on the chart in the Ladies locker room for your availability.

Wishing all members a very Happy Easter.

The Ladies' Christmas Dinner was a great success; much laughter echoed round the room.

‘Le maître d', Chris Bott, kept a well-trained eye on the waiters who were brought in just for that evening.

Creating our own entertainment is a wonderful thing and I believe that we have outstanding talent at Glen Gorse.

I do so hope that the cleaning staff managed to get all the sand up.  No, we did not have bunker practice in the lounge, just an excellent sand dance and many other wonderful star turns.

My thoughts go with anyone who is not well this Christmas - five ladies missed the dinner due to flu and I sincerely hope that everyone has recovered.

May I take this opportunity to wish everyone a very Happy Christmas and a great golfing New Year.
