Callum doing just fine in Australia
Last year's Junior Captain Callum Blair left these
shores in November 2010 to experience life in
Australia under their 'Working Holiday Visa Scheme'.
He set up home in Western Australia and currently
lives between Perth and Fremantle with 3 of his
older brother's friends who have 'taken him under
their wing'. Callum's brother Billy went out
to Perth in 2007 to play 'A' Grade Rugby and made
many friends during his year there. Those friends
have certainly helped Callum to settle very quickly
in his new surroundings.
Callum hopes that he can extend his stay to two
years and is thriving in his new lifestyle. In
January 2011 Callum's dad Bob, our Junior Organiser,
the Vice President Chris Bott and well known Club
Member Mick Remington travelled to Perth to check up
on Callum's progress as part of their own
holiday. They had a great time and are pleased to be
able to report very positively about him.

Callum is now officially a member of The Royal
Fremantle Golf Club, a truly magnificent course some
20 mins from his home. The speed of his acceptance
for membership was very much down to the great
support offered by the RFGC, particularly Neil
Cleary who manages their Junior Section. The fact
that Callum plays off 2 obviously helped to speed
up his application but you only have to play there
to realise why Callum loves this Club. RFGC is a
great test of golf in a beautiful setting on the
hill overlooking the City of Fremantle and The Swan
River estuary. It has a great history and it's well
worth a quick look at their website to get a flavour
of the surroundings. The club celebrated it's
centenary in 2005, having been awarded 'Royal'
status by King George V in 1930.

Callum has two part time jobs. He works at the Golf
Club behind the Bar [lunch and evenings] and also
delivers Pizzas [evening shifts only] so plenty of
time for golf, the gym and the beach. In total he
works 35-40 hrs a wk, which pays for his rent, food,
transportation, gym membership and golf. Bob says
that Callum is treating his stay in Australia 'as a
learning experience at The University of Life'. He
is most keen to succeed. Take note that Callum was
witnessed cooking, washing, ironing and cleaning
during the visit from dad and friends. He may only
be 18 but he is growing up very fast.
The competition season for all Western Australia
Golf starts this week, which means plenty of Club
competitions and their equivalent of our Scratch
League, which is known as The Pennants. This will
provide Callum with an opportunity to play many of
the Courses in the Area. He also has his eye on
playing in some of the 36 Hole Western Australia
Open Competitions. He is determined to do well and
to come back to GGGC as a better player, which can
only bode well for our Club. Should he wish to he
can play 3 Medal Rds a week at the Club. All members
are encouraged to put a card in every time they play
9 or 18 holes. Imagine Craig Harris and his gang
coping if it was the same system at GGGC!
During their visit to The RFGC Bob, Chris and Mick
exchanged Club ties with Neil Cleary and other
officers of the Club. An open invitation was also
extended by Chris to any member of The RFGC to play
at GGGC should they visit the area. A sort of
unofficial 'twinning' of Golf Clubs took place that
day.

If you are off to Western Australia in the near
future and would like to look Callum up then please
contact Bob. His details are on the website.
Finally Callum sends his best wishes to all Glen
Gorse members and Staff and reminds his close
friends at the Club to keep in touch. He would like
to hear all your news.
