Glen
Gorse's Moira Page has surely achieved a unique
double by not only winning the Ladies' Club
Championship for a record 15th time, but also
setting a new course record for the ladies' course
at the Club with her excellent two under par 71 in
the afternoon round of this year's 36 Hole Ladies'
Club Championship.
Moira, a former assistant in the Pro
Shop at the Club, and who was the L&RLCGA Captain
for 2000-01, first won the Championship in 1987 at
the age of 17, and has had a straight run of
victories since 2004. She now holds the course
records for both the "old" course, which she took
with a 70 on Lady Captains' Day in 1992, and the
"new" course, which was lengthened to 5682 yards in
1994, resulting in an increase of the SSS to match
the Par of 73. This new course record overtakes
former member Gerry Bray's 72 in 1997; (Gerry also
won the Ladies' Club Championship in 1995, 1998 and
1999), and Moira is "delighted to have got the
course record back after such a long time".
These most recent results, and her scores in
qualifying competitions in early June this year at
Woodhall Spa, when Moira played 2 over the SSS on
the Bracken Course and 4 under the SSS on the very
difficult championship Hotchkin Course, have reduced
her handicap to 0.5. Moira's greatest golf aim now
is to get down to scratch.
For those interested in "stats", Moira's record
setting round of 71 included 3 bogeys, 7 pars, 6
birdies, and 1 eagle - on the Par 5 421 yard 13th;
the only blot being a triple bogey 7 at the stroke
index 1 Par 4 6th hole. Needless to say the 6th is
now not her favourite!
