Tuesday the 16th
December was the day of the Seniors Christmas
extravaganza at Kilworth. 29 members of Glen took
part in what has become an excellent senior's event.
25 teams of 4 competed for the prizes in a Texas
scramble in misty and at times very cold conditions.
I am pleased to report once again our club did not
let us down.
First and foremost congratulations to our President
who being frustrated at the delay on his own tee
took the initiative and played first. Using a 4 iron
on the 153 (approx) par 3 11th, much to the
disbelief of his team had a wonderful HOLE IN 1.
Fortunately we at
Glen are well insured so the pain for the pleasure
was not felt by himself.
Geoff Peck held the nearest the pin for some time
but the winner in the last group to play the hole
was Mike Smith.
Roy Nightingale held nearest the pin on the 2nd hole
but was beaten (not surprising) being only the 12th
player to play it (it wasn't a bad shot!)
Once again the team of Paul Southall, Roy Allen,
Dave Ball and Brian Smith of Cosby were in the
prizes finishing 3rd.

Mike Remington featured in the team in second place.
Congratulations to all the prize winners.
Malcolm Simpson - 16/12/08
The annual Christmas
Seniors Competition was played on December 10th on a
cold and frosty morning, with 19 pairs taking part.
Third place on local rule were David Rudkin and Roy
Nightingale.
2nd on local rule were George Tippin
and Terry Mobbs (42 points).
The winners
were Geoff Peck and Neil Gray on 44 points.
John Pardoe - 10/12/08
At the recent
competition at Kilworth Springs, Glen Gorse member
Bob Rowlatt was 2nd on local rule with 40 pts. Our
President, David Pretty, missed out on a prize for
the second month with a score of 38 pts, missing out
by 1 point.
John Pardoe - 20/11/08
Following the visit
of 16 Seniors to Beadlow Manor, and their various
misdemeanours, Malcolm Simpson acting as sergeant at
arms was able to raise fines totalling £32.35 which
he donated to the Stroke Association.
John Pardoe - 03/11/08
The
latest Senior's Open at Kilworth Springs was held on
Tuesday 28th. We were once again represented in the
prizes by the winner with 41pts. Before we teed off I
overheard him being asked if he was using his previous
winnings to pay for the entry fee. "No" was the reply "I
will be winning more and need some new equipment". Any
Ideas? Congratulations to Mr ... wait for it ... Brian Fagin. I
bet that doesn't come as a surprise!

Captain’s Farewell
I can’t believe how quickly the year passed. I met and
played with some lovely people both from Glen and
visitors.
I hope they enjoyed
my company also. The support I received from the
section was without doubt magnificent and I hope you
will carry this on with next year’s Captain, John
Pardoe. He has supported me well throughout the
year; many thanks to him.
The year also showed how much outside clubs think of
Glen Gorse by virtue of the numbers attending our
Open and Festival week. I think this is bolstered by
the fact that we do not award golf prizes but
vouchers.
The success also revolves around other people,
namely Francis and his team whom I am sure you will
all agree (and it has been said many times already)
have done a wonderful job this year, particularly
for the Senior’s Open in September. On the Tuesday,
at 2.30 in the afternoon, we met and were undecided
as to whether we would be able to play. Francis
phoned the Met office for a forecast and as a result
we decided to give it a go and how well the course
was that day.
Dick, Richard and Elaine backed up by their lovely
girls and not forgetting Sam. Complements have
flowed here also. We were never let down and it was
entertaining sometimes, meeting with Dick to discuss
the menu etc.
Jenny and Carol for their help and advice when
needed.
Finally, as I have said before, the section.
I am now looking forward, as is my wife, to a long
awaited break.
Once again, many thanks and best wishes to one and
all for the future
Signing off, once and for all, as the Captain.

The Seniors continue
to perform well at Kilworth Springs. The latest
result being a 5th place for Phil Adcock and a miss
for Malcolm Simpson and (would you believe it) John
E Johnson on countback. Hopefully there will be more
next week.
Wednesday saw the
annual AMAM shotgun start followed by the AGM.
The winners were David Johnson, David Sellicks,
David Rudkin and Ray Burdett with 84pts.
Malcolm Simpson - 24/10/08
Saturday saw the inaugural end-of-season dinner for
the Seniors and their partners. 36 attended; there
were 2 notable absentees who will remain nameless!
The Senior Captain’s wife, Robbie, gave an account
of her year answering the phone, living with the
Captain etc, which seemed to go down very well.
The atmosphere in the Clubhouse was superb with lots
of laughter and chat. I hope this event will go from
strength to strength. Many thanks to all who made
the effort to attend; it was good to see you all.
Malcolm Simpson - 21/10/08
The final of the
Seniors Summer Knockout took place this morning
between Dave Rudkin and Dave Pretty.
In blustery conditions, play commenced at 10.00am.
Rudders took an early lead from the first hole but
was all-square by the 4th. Some terrific golf was
played by both members and the turn saw The Pres 2
up. Only 2 shots to par had been dropped at this
stage. The high quality of play continued and pars
saw the match all-square after 13. After a bit of
bother on the 14th, with trees getting in
the way of Rudders, the Pres took the lead,
increased it to 2 on the 15th and finished up
winning 2 and 1. Congratulations to both players for
producing a high quality final. The Pres only came
to be playing because I had an odd number on the
signing up sheet and I put his name down to balance
the draw. Perhaps after this he won’t be so
reluctant again.
Malcolm Simpson - 20/10/08
Monday saw 16 Seniors visit Beadlow Manor

it is demolished. You will see from my room what
opulence was provided!

The Seniors Open
took place on the 10th of September despite and
inspite of the atrocious weather we have had
recently. The green keepers did a magnificent job
getting the course playable and to such a high
quality. We had 36 clubs represented on the day which
I am sure reflects the high standards we provide and
value for money and without exception all visitors
were full of praise for GGGC.

Spondon Trophies -
The quarter final of the plate competition was
played last week at Glen against a team from
Cavendish Golf Club from Buxton. It was a closely
fought game. At the 15th tee we were up in 4, all
square in 2 and down in 1. We, however, contrived to
lose from this position 4 to 3.
I spoke to the secretary of the competition
following our defeat and was informed that, since
they had taken over the sponsorship some 5 years
ago, they had donated on average £4000 per annum to
junior golf. This seems a worthwhile competition to
carry on as it only costs the club £55 to enter.
The signing up sheet for the end of season dinner
for members and partners is now up on the board for
the 16th October. Please try and make this a success
by attending.
Please keep an eye out for the AM AM shotgun start
on the 22nd October, to be followed by the AGM

The Senior's Open on
Festival Week was held on Monday 4th August. There
was a full entry of 144 players. 45 different clubs
were represented which proves how popular we are.
The conditions provided a good test of golf and some
respectable scores were recorded even though the
competition was played off the white tees and 3/4
handicap. The winners were GGGC's own Joan & Neil
Pearson (pictured below with the Captain): -

The latest encounter
in our quest to win the plate competition in the
Spondon Trophies knock out took place today at Glen
Gorse. We hosted Pastures B from Mickleover. We had
previously been beaten by their A team in the first
round proper. This time I have the pleasure to
report a reversal of this as we won 4 1/2 to 2 1/2.
You may well hear in
the clubhouse that we have a sacrificial lamb who we
put out against their better players for the benefit
of the team as whole namely John E Johnson well done
to him for registering a third successive
defeat.!!! Someone has to do it!! For those just
tuning in this is the first time as a club we have
entered this competition. Today's representatives
were;
Phil Adcock won 6/5
Dave Pretty won 10/8
Roy Nightingale won
7/5
Malcolm Simpson won

You wont believe
this!
Today saw the Seniors play Lutterworth Golf Club in
a Senior's match for the first time. Imagine the
Captain's amazement as he approached the final green
to be greeted with a fly past of (wait for it)
A Lancaster bomber
A Spitfire
A Hurricane
A Tornado
How can Glen match that next year. I wish the
incoming Captain all the best. Please do not let us
and the Golf club down!!!!Malcolm Simpson - 06/06/08

GGGC entered the Spondon
Trophy Knockout competition this year for the first
time. The format is a team of 7, aged 50+, with teams
entering from all over the Midlands and Northern
counties. Unfortunately we were beaten in the first
round by a team from Pastures Golf Club in Mickleover,
Derbyshire. There is a plate
competition for all 1st round losers. We played this
stage on Friday the 23rd and were successful by 5½
to 1½.
Congratulations to all who won and thanks to those who
played who were not in the original 11 requested to
play. I will keep the site informed of our progress as
and when.
The Seniors Captain was honoured with a presentation of
a bottle of Taittinger Champagne for his "sartorial

Wednesday 26th March
Today was the first Captains away day to be held in
March. I felt it more appropriate to hold the event
at the beginning of the season so that we could all
get together and meet someone we did not know and
get the season off to a good start. 40 members took
part at Wellingborough.
For a second time (known only to my wife) I made an
optimistic statement that we would not have any rain
and unlike at Oadby we did not. Now Rob wants to
know what I would have been like had I have been the
Seniors Captain years ago (not that I would have
been old enough).
We were well received by the staff at Wellingborough
and they even provided a starter for us. The event
was an AM AM with 2 scores to count on each hole off
full handicap (the more elderly of our section find
it difficult to take on board multiple
variations)!!.
The
first tee time was scheduled for 10.00 after coffee
and Bacon Baps and despite problems on the A14
everyone arrived on time.
All it seems had a good day in spite of or despite
of the golf, and the banter was very good natured. I
certainly had a very enjoyable round with Roy
Stretton, Rod Ward and Peter Thomas (who we had to
keep in check from time to time) without
contributing much to the last 9 holes.
The winners with 87 pts were
Dave Rudkin
Alan Strachan
Derek Ablett
And who would believe
it!!!
John E Johnson (It broke my heart to have to
mention his name)
Well
done to them all.
In
2nd place
Mike Smith
Cyril Woodruff
David Martin
Mike Mackley
In 3rd place
John Nuttall
Stan Knight
Terry Jones
Norman Smith
Many thanks to you all for attending this day and
making it so successful and long may the enjoyment
continue.

Thursday 20th March
Today was the 2nd
holding of the Seniors Spring Greensome.
Despite much pessimism about the weather and my
optimistic feeling (the first according to my
wife) we played in good dry but cold conditions. An
almost complete field arrived (the only absentee
will remain nameless and shameless). I was offered a
bundle by our racing correspondent against it being
dry but declined, what a mistake!! He was also
allowed to take part as part of our introduction
process to the nearly seniors in order for him to
acclimatise himself to the secrets and wherewithal
of the seniors section. It finished as a close call
to all but the winners!!!
David Johnson and David Lang missed out on the
prizes
due to a disastrous last hole.
In 3rd Roy (the ringer) Nightingale and Graham
Moore

In 2nd Norman Atkins and Brian Pickford both on
71 LR

The winners with a truly magnificent 68!!!
MALCOLM SIMPSON AND KEITH DOBNEY.
I must give credit to our racing correspondent who
having played with me on Tuesday advised me my putter
face was slightly open as I struggled to sink a put.
Keith said he knew I had a weakness with 2 to 3 ft
puts so mostly kept me out of this range and thought
he would test me with the longest of the day on the
last which was about 30ft. No problem straight in
the middle! Many thanks to Keith. Thanks to our
playing duo of George Tippin ( who once again wore
the new seniors top) and Terry Mobbs who today
proved they are human but I hope don't reproduce
this form in the seniors foursomes county knockout.
My thanks also go to John the Vice Captain for the
registration and production of the cards and also
Alan Strachan for his verification of the cards and
his continued support of the seniors section.
I personally am looking forward to next week at
Wellingborough and hope it is as successful as
today. Once again many thanks for your support.

Monday 17th March Seniors Foursomes Report:
The final of the
Seniors Foursomes was played today at a bright if
somewhat cold and damp GGGC course between George
Tippin and Terry Mobbs v Mike Mackley and Colin Durant.

Play commenced at around 9.30 with both players getting
their drives away well. Putting became the main
difference between the two pairs and George and Terry
won the first 2 holes. Mike and Colin got one back on
the third but by the 6th were 4 down. Both pairs were
playing a good standard of golf and continued throughout
the match. Although Mike and Colin did win some holes
they never won 2 on the trot. The only hole that was
halved was the 13th. At that stage they were still 4 up
and the tee on the 14th being so far advanced due to the
work being carried out meant that it was a possible par
3 for George and Terry as Terry had the honour and they
were also receiving a shot. Terry did manage to drive
the ball virtually to the green and they won the hole to
come out on top 5 and 4.Congratulations to them and they
proceed to represent the club in the Leicestershire
Seniors Club knockout. I will keep you all informed of
their progress and I personally am expecting great
things from them!

Commiserations to the losing finalists who gave a good
account of themselves but, on the day, were beaten by the
better pair.

January 2008 : I will be putting the entry
sheets and notice up about the Leicestershire
Seniors Golf Society Championship. This is one
of the competitions you are eligible to enter for
having paid your £3.
In the past we have
not had very good support from our members. As you
will see from the notice there is a prize for the
best 4 players from each club. Lingdale have
dominated this category in the past by virtue of
having some 50 members enter. It would be nice to
see our name on the shield.
Please give this
competition your serious consideration and lets try
to win at least one prize. Many thanks in
anticipation.

Tuesday 18th December
What
a day for GGGC Seniors. Today we played the Christmas
AM-AM at Kilworth Springs and didn’t our members do the
club proud.
It
was a dry but bitterly cold day when we had a shotgun
start at 10 am. I, your captain, played with Geoff Peck,
Roy Nightingale and Keith Dobney starting on the 9th.
What a start we got off to with 7 points. That was what
we thought was the highlight and crowning glory for the
day! How wrong can you be? We battled on but never gave
a thought to being in the prizes despite Geoff playing
some marvellous golf (so he said).
Anyway the results were as follows: -
As a
member of the winning team Michael Remington with
80 pts
2nd
were Neil Pearson, Charles Broughton,
Terry Mobbs and George Tippin with 79pts

3rd
Geoff Peck, Roy Nightingale, Keith
Dobney and Malcolm Simpson with 78pts

5th
Keith Hopewell, Ken Toynton, Paul
Southall, Brian Smith (Cosby) with 77 pts on
local rule

Congratulations to one and all long may our success
continue.
